The Group comprises clerical and lay volunteers who are ultimately responsible to the Bishop of Blackburn. Our Mission Statement reads as follows: The Group will encourage and help people - particularly members of the Church of England - in the area covered by Blackburn Diocese to foster, directly and/or indirectly, sustainable economic development in the underdeveloped world abroad. Amongst other things, the Group will seek to ensure that trade to which such development gives rise offers a fair return to producers. We are nearly half-way through the implementation of a three-year Forward Strategy, which essentially reads as follows: In ways which seem likely to lead to the best possible outcomes (including collaboration with other interested parties when this promises to bear extra fruit), the Group will: continue to run the Bishop’s annual Harvest Appeal [which has for many years raised well over £20,000 annually to support specific World Development projects]; continue to foster Fair Trade in Parishes and Church Schools in the Diocese [which has for several years been a Fair Trade diocese] and generally throughout the diocesan area; campaign, and encourage parishioners and others in the Diocese to campaign, appropriately on World Development issues - focusing on one campaign at a time. |
