| Areas of Work | St Edmundsbury and Ipswich achieved Fairtrade Diocese status in 2005. There is continued activity to monitor this and encourage ever more churches and individuals to make the commitment. We work closely with the Diocesan Environmental Officer to highlight environmental concerns and in particular the impact of our profligate lifestyles on the poor of the world. In February 2009 the Diocesan Synod unanimously approved an Environment Policy for the Diocese. A recorded interview from the Bishop of Kagera, in which he highlighted how climate change is already a very real problem in the developing world, was the centrepiece of the debate. In 2007/8 we prepared 6 discussion leaflets presenting the experience of our link Diocese of Kagera in NW Tanzania and exploring lessons for our own situation. The topics covered were: education, evangelism, farming, climate change, health & migration. During 2006 St Edmundsbury and Ipswich launched an appeal for the rebuilding of the Kagera Diocesan primary school. This is an on-going project with 3 classrooms currently built and in use. We also regularly provide secondary education for 70 pastors children. |
