| Areas of Work | World Development group exists to challenge the churches to campaign on, direct resources to and theologise about the persistence of poverty as an affront to the dignity of humankind. As a part of this the diocese attained Fairtrade status in 2005 and gained recertification in 2008, it will be seeking further recertification again in 2012. We also ran a 1% appeal “The Penny in the Pound Appeal” which supports water aid projects in Zimbabwe, El Salvador and Afghanistan. This has raised over £225,000.00 and closed in 2012 We work on HIV/AIDS in conjunction with “Faith in People with HIV” and have organised conferences and events to raise the profile and decrease the stigma of this issue. The subject of a Bishop's Lent Appeal was to support work in our link diocese of Trichy-Tanjore CSI for HIV testing and support. In 2009 we hosted a performance of Voices From The Edge in association with Actors for Human Rights. We produced an environment strategy resource for the parishes. In 2008 we hosted a pre Lambeth event which focussed on Climate Change around the world and an abridged video may be seen here.
We see our role to resource the Diocese and parishes on issues of church and society. As Christians we offer the context of our faith as the basis of our engagement with the world. We encourage our parishes to care about God’s world and people. This is rooted in gospel values such as the command to love our neighbour as ourselves and to offer support to the most disadvantaged in society. We use a variety of action groups to take this work forward, through work in parishes, deaneries and conferences, with training days and support groups. Officers and staff are available to talk with deaneries, chapters, parishes and other groups and to receive enquiries. |
