Areas of Work

World Development group exists to challenge the churches to campaign on, direct resources to and theologise about the persistence of poverty as an affront to the dignity of humankind. As a part of this the diocese attained Fairtrade status in 2005 and gained recertification in 2008.

We also run a 1% appeal “The Penny in the Pound Appeal” which supports water aid projects in Zimbabwe, El Salvador and Afghanistan. This has raised over £250,000.00

We work on HIV/AIDS in conjunction with “Faith in People with HIV” and have organised conferences and events to raise the profile and decrease the stigma of this issue. In 2009 the subject of the Bishop's Lent Appeal is to support work in our link diocese of Trichy-Tanjore CSI for HIV testing and support.

In 2007 we have been part of the Anti Slavery group which organised a conference on Modern Day Slavery.

In 2010 we hosted a performance of Voices From The Edge in association with Actors for Human Rights.

We have recently produced an environment strategy resource for the parishes.

In 2008 we hosted a pre Lambeth event which focussed on Climate Change around the world and an abridged video may be seen here.

Video link and following the God's Fragile Earth service video.

We led on the 2009 visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury to Japan to celebrate the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Anglican Church in Japan, the Archbishop of Canterbury made a week-long visit to Japan during which he visited Anglican churches, universities and schools, as well as the city of Nagasaki. He was accompanied by the Bishop of Leicester, Rt Rev Tim Stevens.
